SEO basics for small businesses in Morocco: where to start

The fundamentals that help Google understand your site: helpful content, titles, language versions and your Google Business Profile.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) isn’t a trick to reach the top of Google. It’s a set of good practices that help Google understand your site and help customers find you. Google says so itself: there is no secret that guarantees the first spot. Here are the basics to get started the right way, with a focus on small businesses serving customers in Morocco.

1. Start with the person searching

Before thinking about keywords, list the questions your customers actually ask: “electrician in Casablanca”, “logo design price”, “dentist open on Saturday in Tangier”… Each page should clearly answer one need.

2. Helpful, original content

Google recommends content that is helpful, reliable and made for people first. In practice:

  • one page for each important service, explaining what you do, for whom, and how to get in touch;
  • real information: service area, opening hours, contact details;
  • no copying from other sites and no artificial keyword repetition.

3. Titles and descriptions

  • Page title: unique, clear and concise, matching the content.
  • Meta description: one or two sentences summarising the page. Google may show it or pick another snippet from the page.
  • Subheadings (H2, H3): they structure the text and make it easier to read.

4. Readable URLs and described images

  • Use understandable addresses with words that describe the page.
  • Add alt text that describes each meaningful image.
  • Link your pages together: from a service to your contact page, from an article to the related service.

5. Organising a multilingual site

Many Moroccan businesses serve customers in Arabic and French, and sometimes English. Give each language its own pages rather than mixing languages on one page, and connect the versions with hreflang annotations so Google knows they are translations of each other. WordPress translation plugins such as Polylang can handle this automatically.

6. Local visibility: your Google Business Profile

If you welcome customers or serve a specific area, a Google Business Profile matters a lot. According to Google, local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (including links and reviews). Google also states that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

  • Fill in every detail accurately: name, address, phone, hours and category.
  • Add real photos of your business.
  • Reply to reviews politely, and never buy or fake reviews.

7. Track progress with Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows whether your pages are indexed, which searches bring visitors and whether there are technical issues. For a quick check of whether Google knows your site, search for site: followed by your domain.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Believing promises of the top spot within days.
  • Stuffing keywords into your copy.
  • Leaving empty or “under construction” pages online for months.
  • A slow site that doesn’t work well on phones.

The bottom line

SEO is steady work: helpful content, clear pages, accurate information and regular follow-up. No ranking is guaranteed, but these basics give your site a real chance to be understood and found. If you’d like a site built on these foundations from day one, see my services or get in touch.
